The
Vampire Squid, Vampyroteuthis infernalis,
can grow to a maximum length of 28
centimeters and lives at depths of 600 to
900 meters.
At such depth, the environment they live is extreme; crushing pressure, and low levels of
oxygen.
The vampire squid is not true a squid since
they do not have ink sacs. To avoid
predation, they use photophores which
produces blue bioluminescent lights. If
threatened by a predator, the Vampire squid
will eject mucus containing photophores, temporarily
blinding any predator that is close, giving time
for a quick escape.
A study conducted
by the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research
Institute shows a vampire squid can also
turn itself inside out to avoid predators.
This display looks threatening, displaying spines.
